Chief Justice Retires

The suspended Chief Justice of Fiji, the Honourable Daniel Fatiaki, has today announced his retirement from judicial office.

In an agreement signed today, Chief Justice Fatiaki has agreed to step down and will discontinue his court proceedings against the State.

The Chief Justice was suspended from office by the President in early 2007 and was scheduled to face a hearing before a tribunal of international judges in March next year. All of the allegations made against the Chief Justice have now been withdrawn and the tribunal hearing will no longer proceed.

Chief Justice Fatiaki has served as a judge of the superior courts of Fiji for over 20 years. He has been awarded honours for his extensive judicial service and, as ex officio president of Fiji’s Supreme Court, has sat on some of the most significant cases in Fiji’s recent legal history.

The retirement of the Chief Justice will take effect immediately in accordance with a settlement agreement under which both sides agree to walk away.
