Statement on Dreaver deportation

Government Of The Cook Islands
OFFICE OF THE DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER

MEDIA STATEMENT

16th December 2008

Cook Islands deputy prime minister Sir Terepai Maoate says he’s very disappointed by the deportation of TVNZ reporter Barbara Dreaver “because it’s just not the Pacific way.”

Dreaver is part Cook Islands Maori. Sir Terepai says her deportation goes against the Pacific way and Dreaver was only trying to do her job as Pacific affairs reporter for TVNZ – that of informing the world what is happening in Fiji and “one she does very capably.”

“We are very interested to know what is happening in Fiji as we have friends and family living and working there, we have students studying at the University of the South Pacific.”
