UNICEF releases new Tap Project video

Wellington, 27 March 2009. -- The UN Children's Fund has released a new video about the Tap Project, which is running in more than 300 cafes and restaurants throughout New Zealand until 9 April.

The Tap Project is a partnership with cafes and restaurants who ask their customers to donate $1 or more for every glass of tap water they normally provide for free. Among the businesses taking part are major chains Robert Harris, Columbus Coffee, The Coffee Club, and Nando’s.

The new three-minute video includes comments from café owners who are supporting the campaign and UNICEF volunteers who talk about their involvement. View the video at: http://www.unicef.org.nz/page/231/TapProject.html

The Tap Project is running in a number of countries, with money raised supporting UNICEF’s life-saving water projects in the developing world. Some one billion people around the world – many of them children – don’t have access to clean drinking water. Nearly 5,000 children die every day as a result of water-related diseases including cholera, typhoid and malaria.

In addition to the Tap Project, UNICEF is organising a Guinness World Record attempt to benefit children. People are encouraged to get behind the epic water pistol fight to be held at Western Springs in Auckland on Sunday 5 April. More than 2,671 participants are needed to break the current world record, which was set in Spain in October 2007.
