Mercedes Coghen: “We Have Succeeded In Transmitting Professionalism And Emotion”

Madrid, 5th of May 2009

Madrid 2016 CEO, Mercedes Coghen, has spoken today to the media accompanied by the Vice-Mayor of Madrid, Manuel Cobo, to transmit their impressions of today’s meetings with the members of the Evaluation Commission from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

“We have had an intense day, and we have managed to transmit professionalism and emotion”, said Madrid 2016 CEO. All the speakers, including Spain’s Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero; the President of the Region of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre; the President of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), Alejandro Blanco; the only Spanish member of the IOC, Juan Antonio Samaranch, Jr., and athlete Joan Lino, among others, have transmitted to the IOC members Madrid’s aspiration to become “the Games of the Human Touch”. These Games would be centered on the values of sport and Olympism.

“We have tried them to leave with the best impression”, said Coghen in relation to the intervention before the Commission of a representative from an NGO and her daughter Mónica, also a hockey player. “Her intervention” – stated Coghen – “represents all the youth and reinforces the “Games of the Human Touch” concept”.

The Vice Mayor of Madrid has been emphatic about Madrid 2016’s presentation. “Madrid 2016 has a great project and those members that haven’t yet decided their vote will reach their decision today”.

During the whole day, Madrid’s bid has officially welcomed the members of the Commission and, in front of them has presented the following themes: Themes 1 and 2: Vision, legacy and communication. Global concept; Theme 9: Sport and venues; Theme 11: Olympic Village; Theme 14: Accommodation; Theme 5: Transportation; and Theme 6: Environment and Meteorology.
