Artists Collaborate To Raise Money For Save The Children’s Haiti Emergency Appeal
21 January 2010 – Artists from New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom have joined together to contribute to Save the Children’s aid efforts in Haiti, through a collective artwork auction on TradeMe called Art Loves Haiti.
The artwork auction was conceived on 14 January 2010, when artist Sarah Larnach and musician Pip Brown auctioned a rare piece of Ladyhawke artwork. This auction received an overwhelming response from compassionate individuals wanting to help and raised $2,866 for Save the Children’s Haiti emergency appeal.
“Art Loves Haiti aims to relieve the suffering, and help rebuild the lives of other children and their families affected by the tragedy,” says artist and Art Loves Haiti organiser Sarah Larnach.
Artists involved in the auction include Sarah Larnach, Henrietta Harris, Anna Stiles, Shane Hansen, Dave Ladd, Sam Mahayni, Minuit, Fleur Harris and Keisha Galbraith.
“I am so grateful for the support that has been shown for this fundraising initiative, and for the compassion being demonstrated in New Zealand and abroad for the plight of so many who have been effected by the tragedy in Haiti,” says Larnach. Larnach's step-sister, Emily Sanson-Rejouis lost her husband and two young daughters in the earthquake. “We are extremely grateful that Sarah Larnach and the other artists have organised this artwork auction for Save the Children’s Haiti Emergency Appeal. It's an absolute privilege to accept their generosity – and give people the opportunity to purchase some incredible artwork that will make a difference for children and families of Haiti,” says Save the Children Chief Executive Liz Gibbs.
“The money raised will go directly to Haiti for immediate emergency supplies as well as the long term recovery effort. We are committed to addressing the immediate needs of children and families and making sure they have a brighter future ahead.” Save The Children has over 200 staff on the ground in Haiti, with the priority of saving children’s lives by distributing emergency aid, including food and medical supplies and field hospitals to provide children and families with life-saving assistance. The agency is setting up spaces where children are protected from abuse, exploitation, and family separation and are able to access safe and quality education.
