EU Aid Chief To Visit Haiti

European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid Karel De Gucht will arrive in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday evening before travelling to Haiti on Thursday morning. He will overnight in Haiti before returning to the Dominican Republic late Friday.

His visit will be an opportunity to assess the immediate life-saving humanitarian aid needs as well as the medium and long-term requirements for reconstruction and rehabilitation of the country. He will also meet with the Haitian authorities and the UN and main aid representatives on the spot, including the team from the European Commission's Humanitarian Department (ECHO), to discuss the coordination of the overall relief co-ordination effort.

The EU is committed to supporting Haiti and its people. Overall, the EU is so far providing more than €422 million euros in immediate humanitarian relief and mid and long-term development aid.
