Fundraiser for Indian Orphanage Huge Success

Fundraiser for Indian Orphanage Huge Success

An Auckland fundraising event to benefit an Indian orphanage raised enough money to cover operating costs for an entire year.

The event featured the Indian film Firaaq, co-written by Aucklander Shuchi Kothari and an art auction with donated works by local artists and brought in more than $11,000.

Held at The Hollywood Cinema in Avondale last month, the full house was the brainchild of Cathy Pope after a recent trip to the orphanage in India earlier this year.

“I visited Akaash Ganga in Gujarat, India at the tail end of my trip and was so humbled by the stories of these children’s lives that I felt compelled to do something to help them. It was so rewarding to pass on my sewing skills and help them make clothes, which is a viable future trade for them.”

“I was overwhelmed by the support from the local Auckland community and the event sold out two hours prior to the screening. It was a fabulous night with food from little India, local Indian musicians and an entertaining art auction compered by Madeleine Sami.”

The money raised will pay for the children’s education, clothing, food and vocational training for a full year.
