NZ Children’s Charity Scoops International Awards

Variety – The Children’s Charity has topped off its 20th anniversary celebrations with a range of awards at the recent Variety World Conference in Los Angeles.

The New Zealand branch of the international charity was recognised as one of the top ten Variety chapters in the world and was awarded the prestigious Mort Sunshine Award for ‘excellence in communication’ for its 2008/09 Annual Report.

Parnell resident Peter Drummond MNZM was presented with a Variety International Presidential Citation from the charity’s international president, Julia Morley, for his efforts for the charity over the past 20 years while The Warehouse was rewarded for its support of Variety over the 2008/09 year with a Variety International Corporate Award.

“Like many businesses, Variety was affected by the recession and financial crisis during 2009, but with supporters like The Warehouse and volunteers such as Peter Drummond, we were able to fulfill our vision of supporting sick, disabled and disadvantaged Kiwi kids to reach their full potential,” said Lorraine Taylor, CEO of Variet, which has distributed $11.7 million to help New Zealand children since 1989.

“Our annual report not only showcased and reported on our successes in 2009 but also celebrated Variety’s 20 year history in New Zealand,” said Lorraine Taylor of the report which was written by Clare Ponton (CP Communications, Taupo) and designed by Tracie Wouldes (Fresh Design, Huapai Auckland)

“The Warehouse has been a supporter of Variety since 2001 and last year we were the recipient charity of its annual Supplier and Charity Dinner and Christmas Card campaign – we also ran a successful Scratch ‘n’ Win promotion in their 86 stores,” said Ms Taylor, who also received mentoring from The Warehouse’s General Manager of Huan Resources.

“We were delighted that former Variety President Peter Drummond was awarded a Presidential Citation. Peter is a passionate and dedicated supporter of Variety who was instrumental in the introduction of our Bikes for Kids programme and outreach programme, Lifeline, and has also participated in every single day of the 20 Variety Bases.

“He was appointed a Variety International Ambassador in 1994 and later elected as International Vice President. Earlier this year, his efforts were recognised with a New Year’s Day honour for services to the community,” continued Ms Taylor.
