PM Calls for International Engagement

News in brief:

(THURSDAY 22ND JULY, 2010 No:1099/ MOI) PM Calls for International Engagement

Following the overwhelming support shown by Pacific Island states in regards to Fiji’s Strategic Framework for Change and Roadmap, Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has reiterated the need for the international communities to engage with Fiji, in its efforts to build a better nation.

In an exclusive interview today at Natadola Intercontinental Resort, Commodore Bainimarama said what transpired earlier this month has certainly strained Fiji’s relationship with Australia and other international communities.

He has called on Australia to understand and partner with Fiji in bringing about changes and reforms before elections on 2014.

“ Further interruptions wouldn’t in any way help Fiji’s situation and will only strain relations.

“ The intentions of the current Government is to carry out reforms for the betterment of Fiji and its people.

“ Laws have been drafted and legislations put in place to weed out corruptions and ill-practices so Government can deliver a best platform forward for this nation in the 2014 elections.

“ Whoever comes into power will have to work according to this reforms which, we believe will benefit Fiji,” he said.

He also reiterated that he has no intention of becoming a politician and pleaded with international communities to understand Fiji’s situation and engage in dialogues for balance and fair criticism.

The call came after the European Union pleaded with Fiji concerning Sarah Robert’s expulsion earlier this month.

“ Australia government admitted that they lobbied behind Fiji’s back in trying to sabotage the Melanesian Spearhead Group meeting.

“ And I urge all international communities to engage in dialogue with Fiji before passing criticism.

“ Constant interruptions by international communities will only dampen our aim for an elections and could eventually affect us from having election in 2014,” he said.

Commodore Bainimarama said Fiji is much safer then most countries and is evident in record tourist arrival from Australia and New Zealand in the first half of the year.

He also highlighted Governments achievement and developments, which has surpassed previous administrations.
