Save The Children Raise $91,000 for flood vicitims
16 August, 2010 –Save the Children Zealand has received an extraordinary outpouring of generosity from New Zealanders who have donated $91,092.75 to help the children and families affected by the devastating floods in Pakistan.
Save the Children New Zealand is providing funds for immediate use on the ground in Pakistan to supply medicines, tents, shelter kits that include cooking equipment and containers for carrying and storing water, and insecticide-treated mosquito nets to prevent malaria.
“The response from New Zealanders has been outstanding and with the latest reports showing how this emergency is worsening we have now increased our target to $250,000 to help meet the growing needs of children and their families in Pakistan,” says Liz Gibbs, CEO of Save the Children New Zealand.
“We’re racing against the clock. More than six million children are affected already and those under the age of five are at greatest risk. Aid workers have been using trolleys on hand winches to cross raging rivers, trekking for hours on foot with mules bringing relief to children and families stranded in the most remote areas,” sysMs Gibbs.
Save the Children has been working with children and families in Pakistan for more than 30 years with a strong local network, and its mobile health teams are working in the flood zones and supporting health clinics.
“Earlier this year we set up a special Children’s Emergency Fund in New Zealand that has also sent $20,000 to Pakistan for flood relief. It’s a fund that New Zealanders donate to regularly that allows us to provide immediate funding to help children when emergencies strike.
“We started the Children’s Emergency Fund during the Haiti Earthquake earlier this year and it enabled us to respond quickly to help the children in Pakistan,” says Ms Gibbs.
