Shristi Sweta Singh Takes
Home Talent Title,
(The First Official Special Award
Of The Pageant)
The Queens Talent Special Award winner Shristi Sweta Singh (Miss Perfect Party Hire) owned the stage last night according to chairman of the judges committee Mr Carl Ngamoki-Cameron.
“I thought she was an outstanding contestant. She had an amazing ability to reach out to the audience. She was dynamic in her use of the stage, regardless of her small stature. She had a real presence and knew how to entertain people. Even though she was surrounded by a group of energetic hip-hop dancers, all eyes were on Shristi when she took the stage,” he said.
The award was presented by Fiji Water Business Development Manger, Vijay Pillay to Miss Sweta Singh, who sang a Fijian song ‘Isa Nogu’ which was written to mark Fiji’s independence. The song was followed by a creative hip-hop routine.
“I chose the song because the meaning of it is really significant for me and I guess for most other people in Fiji. Once I had the meaning explained to me, I was convinced it was the song for me.
“The Black Coconut Tribe hip-hip dancers helped me to choreograph the routine and as you saw, they were very happy to join me on stage for my performance.”
Shristi takes home the first official special award for the Queens category.
“I was so surprised to win. All the other Queens were so happy for me, many of them said I would win, but I still can believe it, I’m still shocked,” she said.
Backstage when asked about how they felt when Shristi won, the Queen’s responded in chorus – “Awesome”.
Miss Fiji Red Cross Zoe Maharaj said, “We’re so proud.”
Miss FENC Fiji and Samabula Drug Store Lamawanaivalu Vesikula said, “When she won, it was like we won too.”
Laughter and excited murmurs filled the Hibiscus tent as the Queens took to the stage.
The action on the stage was complemented by some competitive bantering between contestant supporters. Supporters grouped together according to their favourite contestant hollered chants and challenges to each other across the tent, creating a crazy but fantastic festive atmosphere.
The Kings joined in on the fun later in the evening to support the Queens before the final announcement was made.
Activities on the main stage included some great performances from the Fiji Asian community including, Sri Lankan, Chinese, Indonesian and Korean themed performances. And much loved local band, Ken Jensen and the Hearts entertained the crowds with some good old familiar tunes.
The Sports World Business House sports competition also began yesterday – soccer, touch rugby, volleyball and tug-of-war.
This is what the viewers at home don’t get to see or hear – people have to be at the ground to experience it, so get on down to Albert Park and join in the fun.
