Pacific Human Rights Defenders’ Voices Are Heard

Pacific Human Rights Defenders’ Voices Are Heard

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, Ms Margaret Sekaggya attended a region-wide meeting held with civil society and non-government organizations working on human rights from 6 to 10 September 2010.

The week-long meeting brought together civil society representatives from countries in Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia working on a range of issues including violence against women, torture prevention, disability, children, sexual minorities, freedom of expression and HIV-discrimination.

The meeting focused on identifying practical ways for civil society actors based in the Pacific to effectively utilize local and international mechanisms for raising human rights issues.

The Pacific Regional Representative of the United Nations of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms Matilda Bogner, said: “The Pacific region is sometimes a forgotten corner of the world – this is especially true in relation to global awareness of human rights violations occurring here. This meeting provides an opportunity for greater support and collaboration amongst Pacific civil society to ensure human rights issues are documented and amplified on the global stage.”

The meeting also provided the Special Rapporteur the opportunity to hear about some of the specific challenges Pacific human rights defenders face. At a reception held at the end of the week

Ms Sekaggya stated: “Human rights defenders play a crucial role in promoting and protecting human rights, advocating good governance and holding Governments accountable. They are key actors in any democratic process.

I am concerned about reports of stigmatization, threats and attacks against human rights defenders in the region. It is of utmost importance that human rights defenders be able to operate in a safe environment conducive to their legitimate activities.

I am inspired by the courage and determination shown by civil society actors in the region and I encourage them to persevere in the important work they do every day. “ The meeting concludes on Friday 10 September 2010.
