Jonathan League Kicks Off Nationawide

The six geo-political zones of the country have been drawn for the President Goodluck Jonathan football competition organized by the League of Character Clubs of Nigeria.

Chief Christian Kokoriko, general president of the League while speaking with DAILY INDEPENDENT in Port Harcourt, Rivers state said, centers for the geo-political zones would be Uyo, Yenagoa, Port Harcourt, Kaduna, Abeokuta and Abuja while the finals of the competition would be held in Port Harcourt.

Chief Kokoriko who is also a tourist said the trophy for the competition had been with President Jonathan, the Grand Patron of the League in the Villa since August 6, 2010 when a delegation of the club visited him.

The Chairman Organizing Committee of the competition, Character Binatari Anderson disclosed that it was the first edition of this national soccer fiesta of the President and urged the youths of the country to avail themselves of this great opportunity to showcase their soccer artistry.

The Rivers state qualifying segment of the competition witnessed twelve matches involving twenty four clubs with the highest goals coming from De Pioneers FC which thrashed the Young Stars FC five nil.

According to Kokoriko, the League of Character Clubs had been in existence since 1971 and had immortalized such distinguished Niger Delta leaders as late Harold Dappa-Biriye and late Senator Melford Okilo, pioneer Governor of the erstwhile Rivers state.

He disclosed that the aims of the club was “mould characters” of Nigerians, adding that accomplished professional footballers like the Super Eagle players like Joseph Yobo, Chidi Odiah, George Abbey and John Okon had benefited immensely from the Club.

Chidi Odia, Kokoriko said was given the sum of N1000 as the best player in Dappa-Biriye annual competition In Rivers state.
