Cracks in Illegal Military Regime Inevitable

Fiji’s Military Dictator, Frank Bainimarama, should take note of his crumbling Illegal Regime and let go of his grip on the nation to allow for a swift return to democratic rule, said the Fiji Democracy and Freedom Movement today following the recent resignation of senior member of the regime.

“The resignation of High Chief and holder of senior portfolios in the regime, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, raises serious doubts on the stability of this illegal regime”, FDFM President Usaia Peter Waqatairewa said.

FDFM understands that Ratu Epeli’s resignation was prompted by unjustified demands by Frank to remove an expatriate business executive from the country.

The FDFM says it is not surprised that the regime remains tightlipped on both the resignation of Ratu Epeli and the sudden departure of the business executive.

“This regime always operates under a cloud of secrecy, contrary to the claims of being open and transparent”

The FDFM reiterates its calls for Frank Bainimarama, his troops and his henchman, self appointed Attorney General, Aiyaz Saiyed Khaiyum, to abide by the 9th of April 2009 Appeals Court ruling which declared that the army takeover of the democratically elected SDL/FLP Government in 2006 was unlawful and the interim administration set up thereafter was illegal.

“It’s time for the Military Leader and his troops to return to the barracks. It is advisable that an interim civilian government be appointed by the President which can immediately return Fiji to democratic rule”, Waqatairewa said.
The FDFM says the military government has introduced draconian decrees and put in place strict measures that not only impedes on human rights of individuals but also provides the regime with a safety net to stay in control for as long as they want.

“Yes there are concerns on a vast range of issues including electoral reforms and the 1997 constitution as a whole but let these issues be sorted out by elected representatives and not the Military leaders or the self proclaimed Ministers. Let an elected government enact laws”.

The FDFM has also been reliably informed from sources within that tension is high between the top ranks of the regime and the President, Ratu Epeli Nailaitikau.

“Frank and Aiyaz quite recently asked the Commander-in Chief and the President, Ratu Nailaitikau to sign orders to decommission two very senior military officers, Pita Driti and Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara, which I’m told the President plainly refused to do” Waqatairewa said.

The FDFM says the growing disunity is yet another clear indication that neither the ordinary citizens nor the top brass have any faith in Frank’s regime and it is time Commodore Bainimarama do the honourable thing, stop any further collateral damage on Fiji and stop any further suffering of the unrepresented, voiceless people of Fiji.
