Taiwan condemns North Korean artillery attack

The Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned North Korea’s shelling of its southern neighbor, stating that the action has intensified the military situation on the divided peninsula.

“We strongly denounce North Korea’s provocative act and extend our condolence and sympathies to the families of the South Korean dead and injured,” MOFA Minister Timothy Chin-tien Yang said Nov. 23.

Yang’s remarks came after President Ma Ying-jeou convened a National Security Council meeting in response to the incident. After a briefing by the Ministry of National Defense, Ma instructed relevant government agencies to closely monitor developments on the Korean Peninsula.

The Cabinet also held two media conferences in response to the shelling, urging both “North and South Korea to exercise restraint.”

According to the MOFA, there are no plans to evacuate Taiwan nationals from South Korea, most of whom are staying in the capital Seoul or the southern port city Busan. The ministry advises all citizens exercise caution when visiting the country.
