Save Rapanui Update 13/12/10

Save Rapanui Update 13/12/10

Who is responsible for the disproportionate and overwhelming use of force on December 3rd?

Although the Chilean government continues to publicize that they will hold “working table” meetings with the Rapanui who have reoccupied their land they have used a corrupt judge on the island to criminalize, arrest and improperly evict.

The Chilean government continues to claim that they are enforcing the laws of the land, however, they themselves continue to violate the Chilean Constitution, Chilean local law, and international Law to which they are signatory, the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People.

The Chilean judge on the island, Judge Bernardo Torro, has a personal vendetta against the Rapanui and improperly signs arrest warrants against the Rapanui for trespassing on their own lands, without due process. Using state military forces to arrest individuals, they are also evicting entire families.

This obliterates the promises made by the Chilean government to hold meaningful discussion as to land title. Title has been and continues to be the underlying issue that must be resolved.

The Special Forces being used have been trained in the United States by Blackwater. This may explain why they shot many unarmed men and women in the head and face when they were purportedly there for riot control. Who issued orders to shoot? The Judge? The Police Chief? Or the Vice President, Interior Minister Hinzpeter?

This weekend Santi Hitorangi, who was wounded by fourteen pellet shots in his back and legs while he filmed the events of December 3rd, was forced to leave the island without notice because he was hunted by the Chilean special forces to destroy his media and evidence of the undue violence.

We thanks friends of the Rapanui sovereignty movements for their overwhelming support.
