1045 am, 31 March 2010

• The tourist destinations of Koh Samui and Koh Tao and parts of southern Thailand, including Nakhon Sri Thammarat, Surat Thani, Phattalung, Chumphon, Trang and Satun, are experiencing severe weather conditions and flooding.

• There is a continued risk of mudslides and flash flooding in these areas. Electricity and communications are currently disrupted across the region. Flights and ferry services to tourist areas such as Koh Samui have also been disrupted but are operating sporadically.

• There are 185 New Zealanders registered with MFAT as being in the area affected by the floods.

• New Zealand travellers in the affected areas are advised to check with their airline or tour operator for the latest information on disruptions.

• New Zealand travellers should also follow the instructions of local authorities on the flooding. Weather reports indicate that heavy rain will persist for the time being. Thai weather warnings in English can be found at the Thai Meteorological Department website www.tmd.go.th/en/

• New Zealanders travelling or living in Thailand are encouraged to register their details with www.safetravel.govt.nz
