Rendezvous with Gaddafi's Twitter trolls

With all the atrocities being committed daily by Muammar Gaddafi's thugs and mercenaries against innocent civilians in Libya, it's hard to believe that the Libyan mafia boss's stooges would dare utter a word in his support.

In fact, it's hard to believe that Gaddafi has any genuine supporters.

As a Libyan who knows Libya well, I've never, ever, since the late 1970s come across one single genuine supporter of Gaddafi.

All the Libyans I've met in the past 30 or so years who sing Gaddafi's praises are either members of the security services or the so-called "Revolutionary Committees". These are Gaddafi's principal constituency and are basically a collection of ultra-reactionary thugs, social outcasts, ex-convicts and school dropouts.

Yet, you will find many Gaddafi acolytes on the internet.

Over the past couple of weeks I've encountered a few of these on the microblogging website Twitter, and the experience has left me both bemused and disgusted.

Whether they are Libyans or foreigners, genuine supporters, ignoramuses, idiots or hired hands it's hard to tell with certainty.

But they tended to fall into three categories: "professional" hired hands, neo-conservative Israeli stooges and idiots.

The first, @mathaba2 – an example of a hireling – is the Twitter account of a website called Mathaba (www.mathaba.net), which is Arabic for platform, and is named after the Libyan "Revolutionary Committees" organization.

The Mathaba website describes itself laughingly as "the world's leading independent news agency", "a major online news network" and "the first stateless news organization in history".

My guess is that @mathaba2 is not Libyan but a mercenary from the English-speaking world. If it is Libyan, there's an outside chance that it might be Musa Ibrahim Gaddafi, the nauseating spokesman for the Gaddafi cosa nostra – the style of the twitterer and that of Musa are very similar.

As one might expect, @mathaba2 unashamedly regurgitates Gaddafi's worn-out propaganda, from reminders of how much the world, especially African dictators, love Gaddafi, to the preposterous claim that Libya is a socialist paradise, to the nonsense about the pro-democracy revolution being an Al-Qaeda front.

Here are a few samples of @mathaba2's rather crude propaganda.

The neo-conservative, pro-Israel friends of Gaddafi are perhaps best represented by twitterer @360CNN who calls himself "A. Smith" and is a semi-literate American from the west coast of the USA.

"A. Smith" is very open about both his admiration for the Libyan mafia boss and his love of Israel.

Gadhafi bent over backwards to accommodate and help America and Israel and what did he get? He got BOMBED. US Diplomacy is gone

And he believes that Gaddafi helped Israel deal with the "Iranian nuclear problem". Here are a couple of tweets @360CNN sent to US Senator John McCain and numerous other US politicians:

Calling for the death of Gadhafi who helped Israel set back Iran's Uranium program seems out of place and touch from you.

Gadhafi had Libya voluntarily give it's Uranium Enrichment centrafuges to Israel to help with the Iranian enrichment problem.

Unsurprisingly, @360CNN has bought, lock, stock and barrel, Gaddafi's preposterous claim that the revolution is all Al-Qaeda.
