Pureblack Racing’s Tim Gudsell Takes First US Win

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, 31 May, 2011 – Today Tim Gudsell of PureBlack Racing secured his first United States win in America’s oldest major bicycle race the Kugler-Anderson Memorial Tour of Somerville. Gudsell’s victory in the 50-mile Criterium, known as the "Kentucky Derby of Cycling”, which fell on Memorial Day in the US marks a great start to summer for PureBlack Racing.

“With a massive field of riders and a massive crowd, races like this are always great to win”, said Tim Gudsell, PureBlack Racing cyclist and NZ Criterium Champion, after he took out the win against a classy field of international riders in warm conditions.

Carl Williams, Sports Director, PureBlack Racing said, “Today’s race was again very much a team effort for PureBlack Racing. Riders were attacking off the front right from the start in their trademark aggressive style and were either creating moves or covering any that breaks that tried to get away.”

At the half way mark with around 17 laps to go a split off the front of the peloton saw 15 riders get away included PureBlack Racing’s Gudsell, James Williamson and Scott Lyttle. Shem Rodger then joined the front peloton.

“With four riders in the front group of 16 PureBlack Racing had created a strong platform as the race approached the business end. Shem and Scott were putting in huge efforts continually pushing the pace to get me and James up for the finish,” said Gudsell.

With two laps to go Gudsell got away in a break of four riders and when two of them didn't want to work the break came back together.

“I kept looking for the opportunity to get away and finally went for it with half a lap to go. Giving it full gas I got enough of a gap to hold off the chasers and enjoy my win as I crossed the line, said Gudsell. “The team made it much easier for me to win this one. It was great to get back up on the top step of the podium as it feels like it’s been a while.”
