Welcoming World Radio Day!

11 November 2011
Suva, Fiji Islands

FemLINKPacific, the operators of the "suitcase radio stations" Fem TALK 89.2FM in Fiji today joins members of the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC) in welcoming the confirmation of February 13 as the World Radio Day.

This comes about following a UNESCO resolution at the 187th session of its Executive Board (see point 13 of the agenda at http://www.unesco.org/new/en/executive-board/187th-session/main-series/)

AMARC initially supported the Spanish Radio Academy’s proposal to UNESCO to establish a “World Radio Day” as part of the UN calendar last June.

Radio continues to be an important communication platform, one that is able to harness appropriate, accessible and new media technology. Through community radio communities can access their own media platform which continues to demonstrate the role of radio as a platform for peacebuilding, empowerment and accessible and interactive especially in an age where commercial agendas dictate the programming content of a lot of the corporate broadcast media," says FemLINKPacific's Executive Director, Sharon Bhagwan Rolls.

The main objectives of the World Radio Day are notably to raise the understanding among the public and the media of the value of radio, including in the context of new media, and the value of actively supporting radio; to encourage decision-makers to support, establish and provide access to radio and to provide a networking focus for radio proponents and practitioners worldwide, to exchange ideas, experiences and resources.

Through service to members, networking and project implementation, the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters AMARC, brings together a network of more than 4,000 community radios, Federations and community media stakeholders in more than 130 countries. The main global impact of AMARC since its creation in 1983, has been to accompany and support the establishment of a worldwide community radio sector that has democratized the media sector. AMARC advocates for the right to communicate at the international, national, local and neighbourhood levels and defends and promotes the interests of the community radio movement through solidarity, networking and Cooperation.
