I will bomb Iran nuclear sites: Santorum 01 Jan 2012 US Republican presidential candidate [Grade 'A' sociopath] Rick Santorum has said he would bomb Iran's nuclear facilities upon his election as president if Tehran does not open up its sites for international arms inspectors. Talking to NBC television's "Meet the Press," Santorum said he would tell the Iranian leaders to either open up those facilities, begin to dismantle them and make them available to the inspectors - or the US would attack them. The remarks come as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has conducted numerous inspections of Iran's nuclear facilities, but has never found any evidence indicating that Tehran's nuclear program has been diverted towards weapons production.

Iran successfully tests diverse missiles 02 Jan 2012 Iran's Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari says the Islamic Republic has successfully test-fired various domestically-built missiles during ongoing naval drills near the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Iran's Navy successfully test-fired its first home-built medium-range anti-radar missile, Mehrab, on Sunday during the "power phase" of the massive 10-day Velayat 90 war games near the entry point to the Persian Gulf. In addition to the new surface-to-air Mehrab projectile, diverse types of surface-to-surface rockets were also launched at pre-determined targets and were able to successfully strike them with precision, Sayyari said on Sunday.

Iran to test-fire long range missiles Monday: navy official 02 Jan 2012 Iran will test-fire two long range missiles on Monday during the last day of its naval exercises in the Gulf, a navy commander said. "Today we will test fire Qader and Nour long range missiles during the drill," deputy navy Commander Mahmoud Mousavi told state TV.

NATO forces to attend Home Front Command drill in Israel 02 Jan 2012 NATO forces are scheduled to participate, for the first time, in a home front drill that will be held in Israel next October. The drill, dubbed "Turning Point 6," will simulate a massive earthquake leading to wide-scale destruction and large amounts of casualties. NATO Search and rescue units, as well as supporting units will arrive in Israel to take part in the drill, which will also include Israel's emergency services, the Police, Magen David Adom, fire services, as well as local authorities, governmental ministries, and representatives from the political echelon.

Largest US base in Afghanistan hit 02 Jan 2012 The Taliban have attacked the largest American military base in Afghanistan on the first day of the New Year despite US efforts to negotiate with the militant group, Press TV reports. A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said on Sunday that fatalities had been caused after the militants hit the US Bagram Air Base in the north of the Afghan capital Kabul with nine missiles. He added that they launched the attack when the US forces were celebrating the start of the new year. Afghan officials also announced that the heavily-fortified airbase had been hit by a barrage of rockets, but claimed that the attack had not caused any casualties.

Taliban militants have claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying they have fired 9 long-range missiles on the strategic base, killing dozens of soldiers. Afghan officials have confirmed the attacks, but ruled out any fatalities.

Report of fire attack against N.Y. Islamic center 02 Jan 2012 Authorities say they are investigating a report that a Molotov cocktail was thrown at an Islamic center in New York City. The Fire Department of New York says a blaze outside the Imam Al-Khoei Foundation building in Queens was brought under control quickly after a call came in at about 9 p.m. Sunday. Police say they are also investigating whether there are possible links to fires at a deli about four miles away and two nearby homes. Fighter jets scrambled in Calif. to intercept plane that lost contact with traffic controllers 01 Jan 2012 Federal authorities say fighter jets were scrambled to intercept a small plane that had lost contact with traffic controllers over California. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Mike Fergus says the Cessna 172 was flying from Santa Monica to Oakland on Sunday morning when it lost radio contact with air traffic controllers somewhere near Ventura. Fergus wasn't sure if the jets, which had been scrambled from a base near Fresno had actually intercepted the Cessna, or if they had turned back once radio contact was established.

68 Occupy protesters arrested in NYC 01 Jan 2012 Police efforts to break up an Occupy Wall Street protest in New York led to 68 arrests and an angry Twitter tirade by actress Ellen Barkin Sunday. Barkin tweeted that she was upset by the aggressiveness of the police officers rounding up the demonstrators, the New York Daily News reported. The arrests came as police shut down an Occupy Wall Street march near Union Square.

China calls for calm after man dies from bird flu --Shenzhen Disease Control Centre still trying to find out where man acquired virus 01 Jan 2012 Health authorities in southern China are urging residents not to panic after a man who contracted the bird flu virus died at the weekend, the official Xinhua news agency said Monday. The man, surnamed Chen, died on Saturday in Shenzhen -- a boomtown that borders Hong Kong where thousands of chickens have already been culled after three birds tested positive for the H5N1 avian influenza virus in mid-December.

Thousands of blackbirds fall to their death in Arkansas town for second New Year's Eve in a row 01 Jan 2012 Ancient Mayan legend says that 2012 will bring the end of the world. A small Arkansas town might have shown the first example of that as approximately 5,000 blackbirds dropped dead from the sky last night in the early hours of the new year. As if the incident was not strange enough, it is the second time in two years that the birds have fallen as the calendar year changes.
