The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) will host a Fulbright Foreign Student Enrichment Seminar on global food security for more than 65 Fulbright foreign students from over 35 developing countries. The students, who are pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees in academic fields related to food security at universities across the United States, will attend the seminar at the Pennsylvania State University’s main campus in University Park, Pennsylvania, February 29 - March 4, 2012.
The Fulbright Global Food Security Seminar allows students to explore the topic of food security through an interdisciplinary framework with technological innovators, scientists, and experts in academia, public-private consortia, private sector companies, policy groups, and research and development laboratories. Participants will hear from keynote speaker Roger Thurow, senior fellow for Global Agriculture and Food Policy at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, and engage in interactive panel discussions with food security experts on the topic of creating sustainable food systems. They will also visit innovative research organizations, laboratories, and local farms to learn about new research and development technologies in agriculture, and will participate in cultural activities and a home hospitality evening with local families. Participants will apply their new knowledge in a workshop group exercise, facilitated by the nongovernmental organization Global Knowledge Initiative, addressing a specific challenge of food security and receiving feedback from a panel of experts.
The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs sponsors the Fulbright Enrichment Seminar series as part of its flagship Fulbright Program. These enrichment seminars, an integral part of the Fulbright experience, support the Fulbright Program’s overall mission – to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through academic exchange.
