Breaking: Zimmerman charged with second-degree murder 11 Apr 2012 George Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the February 26 shooting of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin, a Florida state attorney announced Wednesday. State attorney Angela Corey said that Zimmerman has surrendered to authorities and has been arrested. Police say Zimmerman fatally shot Martin, a 17-year-old African-American, on February 26 in Sanford, Florida, after Martin began walking home from a convenience store.

Breaking: UC Davis pepper spray report critical of police action 11 Apr 2012 A newly released report on the November 18, 2011 pepper spray incident at UC Davis says the incident "should and could have been prevented." UC Davis police pepper sprayed a line of students sitting on the ground during an Occupy protest on the campus. Video of the incident went viral and both the police and the administration were heavily criticized in the days that followed.

Zimmerman to be charged in Trayvon Martin case 11 Apr 2012 CBS News has confirmed that neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman will be charged in the February shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla. State Attorney Angela Corey is scheduled to hold a news conference at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the state attorney's office in Jacksonville, Florida related to the Martin investigation. According to a senior law enforcement official, Corey is expected to announce that Zimmerman will face state charges.

Trayvon Martin: Attorneys say Zimmerman contacted prosecutor, Sean Hannity 10 Apr 2012 Like two worried parents with a wayward child, George Zimmerman's lawyers stood puzzled in front of the Seminole County Courthouse on Tuesday and admitted they'd lost control. Zimmerman has not talked to or communicated with them since Sunday, said Craig Sonner, one of his lawyers. Worse, Zimmerman has done two dangerous things, his lawyers said: He telephoned a special prosecutor who's trying to put together a criminal case against him, and he called Sean Hannity of Fox News. Both were bad ideas, said Sonner and co-counsel Hal Uhrig.

Mich. teacher: I was fired over Trayvon fundraiser 10 Apr 2012 A teacher fired from a Michigan middle school after encouraging students to raise money for the family of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin said Tuesday she is confused by the dismissal and wants the school's administration to explain. Brooke Harris was dismissed in March from Pontiac Academy for Excellence after she supported students' efforts to plan a wear-a-hoodie-to-school day. Martin was wearing a hoodie on Feb. 26 when he was shot to death by a neighborhood watch volunteer.

Police set to join London protest 10 Apr 2012 (UK) Hundreds of Devon and Cornwall Police officers are expected to march through the streets of London as part of a national protest against the Government's "unprecedented attack on policing". The Police Federation, which represents rank-and-file officers, is also to ballot its members on whether or not they should have full industrial rights, including the right to strike. The action follows the publication of the most radical review of police pay and conditions for a generation which was labelled as an "attack on the very bedrock of the office of constable".

A judge in Washington DC granted permission for key US intelligence bodies, including the highly sensitive National Security Agency, to exploit a loophole in US freedom of information legislation which bars the release of documentation to any body representing a foreign government.

Army, IRGC set to stage joint drill: Iran Commander 11 Apr 2012 The Commander of Iran's Ground Forces says the Army and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) plan to stage their largest joint military drills in the current Iranian year. "This year the largest joint maneuver between the Army and the IRGC will be staged for the first time," Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan said on Wednesday. Pourdastan said eight military drills will be held by different forces in various areas. The commander added that Iran's air forces plan to stage their specialized drill for the first time after the victory of the Islamic Revolution.

NORAD fighters intercept Korean Airlines aircraft By NORAD 11 Apr 2012 Two F-15 fighters under the direction of North American Aerospace Defense Command intercepted a Korean Airlines Boeing 777 shortly after departing Vancouver, BC, at approximately 4:00 PDT, April 10, due to a potential threat [?] associated with the aircraft. The fighters were scrambled out of Portland, Ore. The Korean Airliner was intercepted, diverted, and the aircraft was shadowed until it landed at Canadian Forces Base Comox at approximately 5:30 PDT. 'The close and transparent coordination that exists within the NORAD agreement enabled this intercept to occur and is truly a testament to the strong relationship between the U.S. and Canada.' [Translation: Sounds like US and Canada wanted to carry out another drill, to prepare for a false flag.]

NORAD Fighters Intercept Korean Airlines Aircraft After 'Bomb Scare' 10 Apr 2012 Almost 150 passengers on board a Korean Airlines Boeing 777 were diverted from their route Tuesday amid 'concerns' that an explosive might be on board. Korean Airlines says a bomb threat was called in shortly after the plane took off from the Vancouver International Airport in British Columbia. NORAD sent two F-15 fighters from Portland, Ore. to intercept the plane soon after the threat was called in. The fighters escorted the plane to the Canadian Forces Base Comox, where the 149 passengers and the flight crew disembarked. They were sent to a secure location while the plane was searched.

Anonymous takes out Boeing website 11 Apr 2012 Anonymous is taking responsibility for launching a coordinated cyberattack on Boeing's website, a high-profile takedown that's part of the hacking collective's campaign against what it believes is a stifling piece of federal legislation. Anonymous announced "Tango Down boeing.com by #Anonymous for #OpDefense" on its YourAnonNews Twitter feed at about 3:45 p.m. EDT Tuesday. Boeing's website was down for most of the following two hours, returning at about 5:40 p.m. ET, but had some trouble again Wednesday morning. Operation Defense, or #OpDefense as mentioned on Twitter, stems from Anonymous's opposition to the proposed Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), a bill that would enable private companies and the government to more easily share cybersecurity information.

Fukushima radiation spreads to US coast - study 10 Apr 2012 Radioactive iodine was found in kelp off the US West Coast following last year's the ongoing Fukushima Daiichi nuclear meltdown, according to a new study. It was already known that radioactive iodine 131 (131-I), carried in the atmosphere, made it across the Pacific within days of the March 11, 2011, disaster, albeit in minuscule amounts. But marine biologists at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) discovered the radioactive isotope in ocean kelp, which is "one of the strongest plant accumulators of iodine," within a month of the accident.

UK in nuclear decommissioning deal with Japan 10 Apr 2012 Britain and Japan signed a framework civil nuclear co-operation pact opening up Japan's multi-billion pound decommissioning sector to UK companies, the UK energy ministry said. The announcement on Tuesday came as UK Prime Minister David Cameron kicked off his tour of Asia in Japan. The tour is aimed at boosting trade and investment ties, while the nuclear pact follows the devastating Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown in March last year.

Polar Bears in Alaska Observed with Patchy Hair Loss and other Skin Lesions 06 Apr 2012 In the past two weeks, 9 polar bears in the southern Beaufort Sea region near Barrow were observed with alopecia, or loss of fur, and other skin lesions. The animals were otherwise healthy in appearance and behavior. The cause and significance of the observed lesions are unknown. Alopecia has been reported in both wild and captive animals in the past. University of Alberta scientists Ian Stirling and Andrew Derocher say the population is neither as "abundant" nor as "healthy" as a Nunavut Inuit organization claimed last week when it used the preliminary results of a recent survey to justify an increase in the annual harvest. Lost in the debate, says Stirling, is the fact that the polar bears of western Hudson Bay might be producing only 20-50 per cent as many cubs as they did 30 years ago when the bears had a month or more time to hunt seals on the sea ice...

Rick Santorum ends bid for GOP nomination 10 Apr 2012 Rick Santorum suspended his bid for the presidency on Tuesday, removing the last significant obstacle in Mitt Romney's now all-but-certain march to the Republican presidential nomination. "We made a decision over the weekend that while this presidential race for us is over for me, and we will suspend our campaign effective today, we are not done fighting," Santorum said at a press conference in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Tuesday afternoon. Santorum did not endorse Romney in making his announcement Tuesday, though he did vow to fight to defeat President Obama and help Republicans win the Senate in the fall.
