Pacific Plan Information Day in Tuvalu

The Pacific Plan and its links to the development priorities of Tuvalu was discussed at the Pacific Plan Information Day held in Funafuti on 1st May 2012.

“The Pacific Plan Information Day was an initiative of the Government of Tuvalu for officials and other key stakeholders to learn more about the Pacific Plan and the Plan’s influence in strengthening the development priorities of Tuvalu. It is also an opportunity for Tuvalu to demonstrate their contribution and ownership of the Pacific Plan,” said Mr Feleti Teo, Acting Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.

“The Pacific Plan Information Day was an opportunity for stakeholders to increase their understanding of the Plan’s purposes, its expected outcomes and more importantly the benefits the Plan offers to the people and Government of Tuvalu. It provided a chance for the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat to showcase its work in Tuvalu in support of the objectives of the Plan in particular the work of the Smaller Island States (SIS) Programme Unit and the SIS Pacific Plan Desk Officer in identifying Tuvalu’s contribution to the implementation of the Plan,” said Mr Teo

The Tuvalu Acting Prime Minister Hon. Taom Tanukale, MP opened the Pacific Plan Information Day emphasizing the importance of the Pacific Plan to Tuvalu and for government officials to recognize their key roles in collaborating with regional organisations including the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in implementing the Plan in Tuvalu.

Hon. Tanukale urged government officials and key stakeholders to maximize efforts in seeking to benefit from the various assistance opportunities available from the Pacific Plan, Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and the Council of Regional Organisations for Pacific (CROP) agencies.

During the meeting, representatives of the respective Ministries presented their progress in the implementation of activities under Tuvalu’s national strategic plan, the Te Kakeega II (TK II)which directly links to the Pacific Plan and SIS Leaders’ priorities for the region.

The presentations also identified challenges faced during the implementation of the Plan and presented Tuvalu’s future priorities and the assistance required in implementing these from the Forum Secretariat and its CROP agency partners.

The Tuvalu Acting Prime Minister commended the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat for supporting the Government’s initiative. The Pacific Plan Information Day was attended by Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, senior government officials, the media and representatives of the civil society.
