Rubella Outbreak in Honiara
The Ministry of Health has confirmed the detection of four cases of rubella in children between the ages of 6 to 15 years. The cases have been reported mainly from within Honiara.
Rubella is a viral infection characterized by a red rash which is also known as German measles.
It is spread through contact with those who already have the infection. Rubella is generally not serious; however, the concern is with infection in pregnant women.
Health authorities say if a pregnant woman gets infected with rubella, her baby can be in danger.
Unborn babies of women who are infected with rubella can suffer birth defects or even death.
The symptoms of rubella include fever, sore throat, painful joints, running noses and a rash that starts on the face and spreads to other parts of the body.
Children infected with rubella should get lots of bed rest and be given lots of fluids. Fever and joint pains can be treated with paracetamol.
Children or adults who are infected with rubella are contagious for about a week before the rash appears and for several days after the rash appears.
Health Authorities have urged parents to keep children at home during this time to prevent the spread of the infection to others.
All parents and public at large are urged to notify doctors or the nearest health clinic if children are infected or if a pregnant woman has been exposed to rubella so that the spread of the infection can be prevented.
Rubella can be prevented through vaccination. The Ministry of Health through assistance of WHO, UNICEF and other partners are planning for a nationwide measles and rubella (MR) vaccination campaign during the month of June for children aged 12 to 59 months.
Along with the free MR vaccination the Ministry of Health will also provide Vitamin A and deworming tablets.
All parents of 12- 59month old children are urged to bring their children for vaccination to the nearest health post during the month of June.
The Ministry of Health will announce dates for the rubella vaccination program soon.
