2012 FTMM: Samoa 155th Member of WTO

Majuro, RMI, 11th May 2012 - Samoa officially became the 155th Member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on 10 May 2012.

This announcement was made at the 2012 Forum Trade Ministers’ Meeting currently underway in Majuro, the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

Samoa acknowledged the valuable technical assistance and support provided by the Governments of Australia and New Zealand during its WTO accession process.

Trade Ministers also acknowledged the important role of the Permanent Delegation of the Pacific Islands Forum to the WTO in Geneva, Switzerland (Geneva Office) in supporting the Forum Island Country WTO Members in their engagement with the WTO, including access to Aid for Trade resources.

The Eighth WTO Ministerial Conference held in Geneva in December 2011 formally approved the accession package of Samoa and Vanuatu, thereby paving the way for them to become WTO Members.

WTO accession is currently in progress for Vanuatu.
