Soldiers wounded in action return to Australia

Two of the Australian Special Forces soldiers wounded by an Improvised Explosive Device in Afghanistan on 3 May 2012 have returned to Australia for further medical treatment.

The soldiers are in a satisfactory condition and will continue to receive specialist care under the ADF Rehabilitation Program.

The third Australian Special Forces soldier is expected to return to duties after a period of rest at Multi National Base Tarin Kot.

Special Operations Task Group Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel J, said despite the incident, the mission to disrupt insurgent lines of funding was successful.

“During the mission several caches containing weapons, ammunition, Improvised Explosive Device components, narcotics and drug manufacturing equipment were recovered,” Lieutenant Colonel J said.

Lieutenant Colonel J said the mission would have long lasting effects on the insurgency in the area.

“This type of mission significantly disrupts insurgents as it severely reduces their ability to fund and arm their fighters,” he said.

“By targeting these areas we reduce the numbers of weapons which make it into the hands of insurgents, which reduces their ability to attack Australian, Coalition and Afghan forces.”
