Nigeria Air Crash: Rivers Lose Naval Commodore
GOVERNOR Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State, one of the key oil and gas producing states in Southern Nigeria, has confirmed that the state lose a Naval Commodore in the Sunday air crash in the country.
Amaechi, who was speaking on Wednesday said the times are not right for the state to lose its illustrious sons and daughters to unfortunate incidents.
He spoke while condoling with the
widow of one of the 153 victims of last Sunday’s Dana Air
flight 0992 plane crash at Iju-Ishaga, Lagos, Navy Commodore
Datoru Abbey-Kalio, Mrs. Nkechinyere Abbey-Kalio, and other
members of the family at their residence in
Port
Harcourt, the state capital.
Represented by his deputy, Tele Ikuru, an engineer, who was accompanied on the visit by his wife, Dr Mina Ikuru, as well as the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Sampson Parker, Governor Amaechi eulogized Commodore Abbey-Kalio, as “one of the best products from Rivers State,” regretting that “it is a big loss to us and to the state”.
“Sometimes things are a bit
difficult when your father is around let alone now that he
is no more. This is a big loss to us as a state. We don’t
have many of them who have reached the top of their careers
therefore losing him at this time is a painful thing to
us,” he said,
adding that “if it were possible to
reverse this incident we would not hesitate to do
it”.
He urged his widow and other members of his family to take solace in the fact that he left legacies for them to emulate, assuring that the state government would do everything within its power to cushion the harsh effect of the loss of their father, praying God to grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.
Responding, the elder brother of the deceased, Mr. Ase Abbey-Kalio, thanked the governor for the visit, saying that though God knows why this happened at this time, the news of the incident devastated the family, expressing delight at the kind gesture of the government at such a time as this, stating that the family takes solace in God to console their hearts.
