ITF promises support for ILA following talks breakdown

The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) has expressed full support for its US East Coast affiliate, the International Longshoremen’s Association after contract talks broke down Tuesday.

The ILA has been negotiating with the United States Maritime Alliance, which represents management in ports, terminals and shipping lines.

ITF President Paddy Crumlin said: “The ITF stands firm in solidarity behind the ILA and calls upon East Coast employers to respond to constructive proposals from the union. The world’s dock workers are waiting, watching and are ready to mobilise”

ITF acting general secretary designate Stephen Cotton said: “ITF affiliates are alerted to the situation yet remain hopeful that a negotiated settlement can be reached and industrial action avoided.”

ITF leaders Crumlin and Cotton met with US maritime affiliates in September to discuss joint approaches and cooperation.
