Balanced Picture Of Fiji

Balanced Picture Of Fiji

Editor,

Prem Charan of Melbourne, Australia wants critics of the Fiji government - including such prominent critics like Professor Brij Lal and Professor Warden Narsey - to "give a balanced picture" of " the good that is happening in the country" and "what is relevant to modern Fiji" (FT 7/1).

Is a military dictatorship relevant to modern Fiji? Is it okay for the people of Fiji to be living under a military dictatorship since 2006?

Do you live in a dictatorship in Australia? Are you the Prem Charan who was my Form 6 History teacher at Natabua High?

If you are then as a history teacher you should know better then to sing the praise of a dictatorship.

The evil that dictatorships do always outweighs the good.

Infact history teaches us that in the long run no good comes out of a dictatorship. That's why there is a global movement towards democracy in the modern world. Fiji is currently out of step with this global trend.

Please read Ian Scott's book World Famous Dictators to obtain a better understanding of the way of the dictator.

The Introduction gives a good idea. It reads:

Dictator :" a ruler who is not restricted by a constitution; a tyrannical ruler". This loose definition might bring a hundred names to mind. Many have ruled without the slightest regard for legal niceties, using force as their first and last resort. What distinguishes the gentlemen in this book is their reputation for excess;the public flaunting of their cruelty, their acute vanity and their grotesque disregard for the people they claim to represent. It is tempting to consider the Idi Amins, or Saddam Husseins of this world as being freaks, personifications of evil. Sadly, while their stories will show you how far sheer ruthless ambition will take a man, they also demonstrate how complex human evil is; all too often the world not only stood by and watched these tyrants evolve, but even fed them and helped them grow into fully fledged monsters.

See where you locate yourself within this paradigm Mr Charan.

sincerely,

Rajend Naidu
