"The Prime Minister is to be congratulated for hitting back at Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison's positioning in relation to 'foreigners' this morning - an attack taking place exactly in the very suburbs in Australia where the coalition for many years has attempted to multiply its poisonous discourse snakes in their shady and festering manure pits of asylum seeker vilification," WA Human Rights group Project SafeCom said today.
"We should not forget that Tony Abbott's 'flooded by boatpeople' television advertisements during the 2010 election campaign showed his 'big fat red arrows' of boat invasions - arrows that did not point at Darwin or Christmas Island, where asylum seekers land, but that they were arrows pointing straight at Sydney's western suburbs," spokesman Jack H Smit said.
"Today, Julia Gillard has put her foot straight on Tony Abbott's latest asylum seeker vilification attempt that started last week with Scott Morrison's heinous attempt to write a new coalition policy on the back of an envelope suggesting that the police come knocking on the doors of surrounding households to warn them when asylum seekers would move into the street - the most brazen attempt to circumscribe asylum seekers for the purpose of targeting them for racial purposes."
"For the first time during the Gillard government's term (and probably for much longer than this term), Labor has clarified a clear point of difference between itself and the coalition - not allowing itself to become a party that vilifies asylum seekers. Although we vehemently condemn the treatment of asylum seekers by Labor, we congratulate the Prime Minister with her confrontation of Abbott and Morrison, right in the suburbs where this fierce fight should take place."
