Black Hawk Helicopter Crashes Near North Korea
Border 16 Apr 2013 A US military Black Hawk
helicopter has crashed near the border with North Korea,
according to a South Korean defence official. The
helicopter, identified by the Yonhap news agency as a UH-60
Black Hawk, came down in Cheolwon county, a defence ministry
spokesman told AFP. The precise cause of the crash was not
immediately clear, but the incident occurred during
ongoing South Korea-US joint military
exercises.
Bomb
Sniffing Dogs, Spotters on Roofs Before Boston Explosions -
UM Coach 15 Apr 2013 University of Mobile's
Cross Country Coach, who was near the finish line of the
Boston Marathon when a series of explosions went off, said
he thought it was odd there were bomb sniffing dogs
at the start and finish lines. "They kept
making announcements to the participants do not worry, it's
just a training exercise," Coach Ali Stevenson told
Local 15. Stevenson said he saw law enforcement spotters on
the roofs at the start of the race. He's been in plenty of
marathons in Chicago, D.C., Chicago, London and other major
metropolitan areas but has never seen that level of security
before. "Evidently, I don't believe they
were just having a training exercise," Stevenson said. "I
think they must have had some sort of threat or suspicion
called in."
'Marathon
as Dry-Run Disaster'
21 Apr 2008 Today thousands of
runners and hundreds of thousands of spectators are
unwittingly taking part in a planned disaster. Yet, they are
not just safe from harm (except for the variety brought on
by running 26.2 miles), they also are participants in an
event that will make the citizens of Greater Boston safer in
case of a natural catastrophe or terrorist attack. Primary
responsibility for the health and well-being of both runners
and spectators in Boston rests with Boston Emergency Medical
Service (BEMS), along with the Massachusetts Department of
Public Health and Emergency Management Agency. According to
BEMS chief Richard Serino, his department considers events
like the marathon and the Fourth of July celebration as
"planned disasters" - safe, controlled environments that
present "an opportunity to test some things you would never
want to test in a real disaster." ...Massachusetts is better
prepared for a real disaster because every Patriot's Day and
Fourth of July is treated as a "disaster."
Boston
runners were warned: Squamish man 15 Apr 2013
(British Columbia) Runners getting set to take part in the
Boston Marathon were warned beforehand that they were going
to die, said a Squamish resident who took part in the race.
Three people were killed and more than 140 were injured when
two bombs exploded near the finish line of the famed
42.2-kilometre running event on Monday (April 15). Mike
Heiliger, 59, said a woman holding several bags was telling
runners who were picking up their pre-race packages in
downtown Boston on Saturday (April 13) that they were going
to die if they participated in the event.
As
Boston reels, New York City put on high alert
16 Apr 2013 In New York City, the New York Police Department
immediately beefed up security at major attractions, hotels
and high-traffic spots yesterday. "We're stepping up
security at hotels and other prominent locations in the city
through deployment of the NYPD's critical response vehicles
until more about the explosion is learned," NYPD spokesman
Paul Browne said. After cops were briefed by NYPD
counterterror officials about "what the concerns were in
Boston, what to look for here," Browne said, critical
response vehicles swarmed Times Square, the Empire State
Building and Radio City Music Hall. Up to 100 cops cars
rallied at one point in Times Square.
Tight
security will be the rule in Boston
today --'That area is pretty much going
to be locked down' --Governor Deval Patrick 16 Apr
2013 Boston will be largely open for business on Tuesday,
but so much will be different, as a wounded city awakens to
higher security and heightened vigilance following the
deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon. Heavily armed police
will be out in force. Bags will be searched on the MBTA.
And the area around Copley Square will remain a crime scene,
closed to the public. Not since the Sept. 11 attacks has
Boston witnessed such a show of martial power coupled with a
sense of vulnerability and grief. The scores of
rifle-wielding state troopers, National Guard members in
fatigues, and municipal SWAT teams who descended on the city
Monday will continue to patrol on Tuesday,
particularly around the finish line of the marathon in the
Back Bay.
Boston
Bombs Force Game Cancellations as London Reviews
Security 16 Apr 2013 The twin bombings that
turned the Boston Marathon finish line into a terror scene
reverberated throughout sports, forcing cancellations in the
National Basketball Association and National Hockey League
and a review of security plans for the London Marathon this
weekend. Two powerful explosions disrupted the 116-year-old
Boston race, killing at least three people and hospitalizing
at least 128. Last night's NHL game in Boston, where the
Bruins were to host the Ottawa Senators, was postponed. The
NBA canceled tonight’s Indiana at Boston game.
Canadian
security agencies on alert after Boston
explosions 15 Apr 2013 Canadian security
officials are closely monitoring the situation in Boston for
any potential threats to this country after two explosions
struck the Boston Marathon. The Canada Border Services
Agency and the RCMP are "exercising increased vigilance at
points of entry into Canada," according to a spokeswoman for
Public Safety Minister Vic Toews. The Canadian
consulate-general, located a few blocks from the site of the
blast, bolstered security after the blasts, but all
diplomats and employees were safe and accounted for,
government officials said.
Security
Boosted Across US After Boston Blasts
--The Federal Aviation Administration places a no-fly zone
over the site of the explosions as officials respond around
the US. 15 Apr 2013 Police in cities across the US
have begun stepping up security following the explosions at
the Boston Marathon. US Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan
said the president's security detail has expanded the
perimeter at the White House "out of an abundance of
caution". Critical response teams have been deployed around
New York City, and officials are increasing security at
hotels and other prominent locations, according to chief
NYPD spokesman Paul Brown. Los Angeles County Sheriff's
spokesman Steve Whitmore says the department has opened an
emergency operations centre, increased patrols for transit
and other critical areas including the Los Angeles Dodgers
game.
Boston

Charlie Beck said Monday his department will increase
officer deployments at sporting events in response to
explosions that killed at least two and injured nearly two
dozen others at the Boston Marathon...Beginning with the
Dodgers-San Diego Padres baseball game Monday evening, Beck

deployment of bomb-squad personnel, dogs and other
"precautions geared to preventing a similar
event."
Navy
bomb unit sent to Boston --State
National Guard troops at scene 15 Apr 2013 The Navy
has sent one of its bomb-disposal units to Boston to assist
local authorities as needed in the aftermath of the two
explosions near the Boston Marathon's finish line. The
blasts killed two and injured more than 100. The
three-member explosive ordnance disposal team based at Naval
Station Newport, R.I., was sent to Massachusetts after state
officials asked for help. Authorities are investigating the
bombings and also are checking other bags and packages that
may have been left unattended as terrified crowds races away
from the chaos Monday.

in the criminal investigation of the explosions at the
Boston Marathon. The announcement came Monday night at a
news conference in Boston whose participants included

Boston. The FBI said it is seeking information, visual
images or details regarding the explosions along the
marathon route and elsewhere.
Lawmakers
call Boston bombing an 'act of terror' 15 Apr
2013 The bombs that exploded near the finish line at the
Boston Marathon Monday are considered a terrorist attack by
several Capitol Hill lawmakers, even as President Obama
refrained using that description earlier in the day. "I
think it has all the hallmarks of an act of terrorism,"
House Homeland Security Committee chairman Mike McCaul,
R-Texas, said. "Multiple bombings simultaneously. A mass
casualty event - spectacular event - that's what they always
try to focus and target. So, to me, it's got all the
hallmarks of that and I believe that it is and the only
remaining issue is who are the perpetrators and what's the
motivation behind it."
3
killed, at least 144 injured in Boston Marathon
blasts 15 Apr 2013 Three people were killed and
144 others were injured this afternoon as two powerful
explosions detonated in quick succession near the Boston
Marathon finish line in Boston’s Back Bay section,

have been a terrorist attack, dozens of victims lay in the
street, some unconscious, some grievously injured, including
some whose limbs had been torn off by the blast. Blood and
broken glass covered sidewalks in the area after the blasts
occurred at about 2:50 p.m.

the Boston marathon, injuring more than 100 people and
killing at least two. A civilian claimed the person was
acting suspiciously and chased him down and tackled him
after the explosions, the CBS News correspondent
reported.

Republican
money backs immigration push 15 Apr 2013 As
Congress readies for a drawn-out immigration debate, an
expanding network of Republican fundraisers is pressing for
a path to legal status for millions of immigrants living in
the United States illegally... In most cases, the donors
have ties to Wall Street and businesses that want more high-
and low-skilled immigrants in the nation's legal labor pool.
Backed by the U.S. Chamber of C*merce, these business-minded
Republican fundraisers say they're getting a relatively
receptive audience in the face of an undeniable new
political reality. ['Immigration reform' is code for
corpora-terrorists getting a whole new pool of cheap labor
-- with US taxpayers footing the bill for the extra costs of
that gift -- while ALL workers' wages are driven down.
That's been Wall Street's goal from the get-go, and why
Obama supports it. --LRP]
Giant
snails on advance in Florida 15 Apr 2013 South
Florida is battling a growing infestation of the giant
African land snail. The snail is considered one of the most
destructive invasive species, feeding voraciously on more
than 500 plant species. They can also eat through plaster
walls, which provides the calcium content they need for
their shells.
