Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka as Head of UN Women

U.S. Mission to the United Nations: Statement on the Appointment of Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka as Head of UN Women

07/10/2013 11:30 PM EDT

The United States welcomes the appointment of South Africa's Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka as Executive Director of the UN Women. Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka possesses a wealth of experience with both the government and NGO community, including serving as South Africa's first female Deputy President. With her record as a strong leader, and advocacy for gender equality, we are confident that Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka will continue the critical work of elevating women's issues at the United Nations and around the world.

The United States looks forward to working with Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka to champion the cause of women around the wolrd and strengthen UN Women, building on the exceptional leadership of former Executive Director Michelle Bachelet and strong stewardship of Acting Head Lakshmi Puri over the last several months.
