Gov’t to Repeal Public Service Act

Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo says the Government through relevant Authorities is working to repeal the current Public Service Act with one that is focused on improving the Public Service in the 21st century.

The existing act is considered out dated and does not accommodate changes and challenges that currently engulfed the public service.

Speaking at the opening of a new state of the art building for the Ministry of Public Service today, Prime Minister Lilo said the Government under his leadership has worked closely with the Public Service Commission and the Ministry of Public Service to drive public service reforms.

Under the reforms, the Government has established a Human Resource Management Board which includes membership from the Ministries of Finance, Public Service, Home Affairs, Education and AusAID.

The Prime Minister also congratulated the Ministry for achieving one of its priority goals within the set time frame and budget allocation.

He said the NCRA Government always advocates the effectiveness and efficiency of the Public Service and it must regulate and monitor all relevant aspects of the public service through relevant legislation for its thousands of officers.

“I strongly believe that in order to competently address the many challenges that the public service is confronting – it is critical that those who are dealing with such public service issues are given proper office space and resources,” Mr Lilo said.

He added that the Public Service House is a major policy statement towards achieving this objective and with a proper home - those serving in the ministry will be more determined to deal with the many challenges engulfing the public service.

Prime Minister Lilo jointly opened the new building with the Minister of Public Service Hon. Stanley Sofu in the presence of Ministers, dignitaries and government officials.
