Tokelau Transport Services Disrupted by Bad Weather

Tokelau Continues to have its Transport Services disrupted by Bad Weather

The unpredictable weather patterns have had its tremendous impact on Tokelau’s shipping services with another sailing cancelled. The country’s only means of transportation and providing supplies to the villages has now been rescheduled once again.

Tokelau’s transporting vessel, the Pacific Basin Matua(PB Matua) was schedule to depart the Samoan wharf at Matautu for Tokelau on the 18th of March 2015 - has now been postponed.

The decision by the Transport and Support Services director, Asofa Fereti, came after reports from the villages and the Metrology Office in Apia highlighted sailing conditions to be unsafe.

Tokelau’s Transporting vessel, PB Matua has already been rescheduled three times this week. Sailing schedule has been changing excessively over the years, mainly due to unsafe weather conditions.

Impact

Each sailing cancelled has had a costly impact on the Government’s development activities and the livelihood of the Tokelau people. It has slowed the progress on the work/reporting activities to be carried out on island. Tokelau Public Servants on many occasions were unsuccessful in attending crucial meetings due to cancellation of sailing.

The department of Transport has had to compensate its people for goods due to ship sailing being called off. Goods were found to be either lose its freshness condition or rotten.

The PB Matua plans to commence on its normal sailing schedule on the 25th Wednesday 2015, base on the weather conditions from updated reports.
