Assistant Secretary Tom Malinowski in Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Afghanistan

Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Tom Malinowski traveled to Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Afghanistan from April 2 – 10. In Sri Lanka, he met with senior government representatives to discuss human rights and strengthening democracy, transparency, and accountability. He also met with representatives from human rights, religious, and civil society organizations.

Assistant Secretary Malinowski then traveled to Pakistan to meet with government and military officials to discuss human rights, rule of law, and media safety and security issues. There, he also met with human rights and rule of law experts, civil society leaders, journalists, and media advocates.

In Afghanistan, he met with government officials and civil society representatives to discuss the importance of protecting and advancing gains in human rights—especially women’s rights—democracy, building accountable governance and security institutions, and ensuring safety and security for journalists and media actors.
