Dr. Ashrawi calls for Palestine to not be abandoned

In separate meetings, Dr. Ashrawi calls on the international community not to put Palestine on the back burner

PLO Executive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi met with the Deputy Head of Mission of the Representative Office of the Federal Republic of Germany Ramallah, Tobias Krause, at the PLO Headquarters in Ramallah.

Both parties reviewed the latest political developments, including the internal rift and the need for a national unity government and for reconciliation.

They further discussed the escalation of Israel’s violations on the ground, in particular its illegal settlement enterprise, expansion of the apartheid wall in and around Jerusalem, and continued land theft and confiscation of Palestinian resources.

The role of Germany and Europe in peacemaking and the need for Germany to implement the EU guidelines on settlements and the labeling of their produce and products, as well as issues of mutual interest and continued coordination and cooperation, were also addressed.

In her meeting with Mr. Krause, Dr. Ashrawi stressed, “It is clear that there is a gap between public opinion and official policy. Governments worldwide have to undertake the imperative to hold Israel accountable and to exhibit the political will required to end the military occupation of Palestine.

If the international community does not act with great urgency to end the current dynamic and Israeli violations of international law, Israel will have successfully buried the two-state solution, which would oblige all parties concerned to seek other alternatives to achieve peace and stability in Palestine and throughout the region.”

In addition, Dr. Ashrawi met with Director of The Carter Center Israel-Palestine Field Office Nathan Stock.

Both Dr. Ashrawi and Mr. Stock discussed the current conditions and focused on the internal situation, including the political rift, the need for reconciliation and a Palestinian government of national unity, and the necessary steps required to end the illegal and cruel siege of Gaza, to deliver the promised funding for the reconstruction of Gaza, and to relink Gaza to the West Bank.

In the meeting, Dr. Ashrawi also called on the international community “to think in an integrated way and not to put Palestine on the back burner knowing that Israel is using this time to expand its illegal settlement enterprise, steal more Palestinian land, and ethnically cleanse Palestinian communities, among other violations.”
