ADC launches emergency appeal after Myanmar floods
New Zealand-based microfinance charity ADC has launched an emergency fundraising appeal to help victims of devastating floods in Myanmar.
Torrential rains swept the country in late July, causing severe floods in 12 out of Myanmar’s 14 states. At least 88 people have been killed and more than 330,000 others have been affected in some way.
All funds raised in the appeal will go directly towards helping people in the northwestern town of Kalay, where ADC’s microfinance operations are based. Local media reports say 10,000 residents have been displaced and government aid is in short supply.
Photos from the area (attached below) show the floodwaters have receded, but have severely destroyed homes, family businesses and other amenities.
ZMF Bank, ADC’s local partner, says funds are needed immediately for food, medicine and other basic necessities. The bank’s six Kalay-based staff are providing meals for around 50 people each day and preparing clothing packages.
“Because ZMF works with poorest members of this community, many of its clients are among those worst affected by damage to homes and businesses,” says ADC’s Executive Director Andrew Colgan.
“We have seen the remarkable optimism and determination of these people to build livelihoods, but it looks like a large number have lost almost everything. The bank is well-placed to respond to short-term needs, and all funds raised will go a long way towards getting this community of amazingly resilient people back on its feet.”
ZMF staff will spend the coming days contacting clients to assess how badly they have been hit. Those they have already spoken to say they are determined to rebuild their businesses and livelihoods.
Loan repayment requirements have been suspended for many clients, and emergency grants for basic needs will be made available to those worst-affected.
