Tearfund Appealing for Donations for Fiji

Tearfund Appealing for Donations for Fiji

Tearfund is appealing to the New Zealand public for donations to help families affected by Cyclone Winston.

Through its local partners it is planning a response to meet the urgent needs of those living in the poorest and most vulnerable communities.

This includes informal settlements, which have incurred significant damage from Cyclone Winston. Many are poorly constructed and lack access to services like power or water.

“Families are returning from evacuation centres to their homes and are finding them damaged or completely destroyed,” says Tearfund CEO Ian McInnes.

“These communities were among Fiji’s most vulnerable to begin with. They have now lost their subsistence gardens and in some cases their livelihoods, putting tremendous strain on households. It’s important that we help these people, fast. Looking ahead, Tearfund aims to not just restore such settlements, but make them more resilient to future events.”

Donations can be made online at Tearfund.org.nz or by calling 0800 800 777.
