Verata stretch made road worthy
MOTORISTS and up to 300 families between Verata Village and Kasavu can expect improved road conditions once Fulton Hogan Hiways completes rehabilitation of a 3.5-kilometer stretch of Kings Road that has had minimal work on it over a number of years. The upgraded road is located 2.5 kilometers northwest of Nausori Town.
Work progresses on Kings Road through the village of Verata.
Fulton Hogan operations manager Phil Tombs said that work continues unaffected by Cyclone Winston that did little damage to the stretch now being upgraded. He said the road prior to the upgrade had a significant number of deep potholes and consistent failures of the tarsealed edges made the road remarkably narrow.
“We are undercutting some parts of the road because of poor subgrade. Subsoils will be added to cut off the water that migrates onto the pavement,” Mr. Tombs said.
“It will then be back-filled with new metal and then overlaid with approximately 100 millimeters of aggregate over the whole section. We will then stabilize the road and seal it.”
The presence of a major water main running parallel to the right of the upgraded stretch in the direction of Kasavu, however, is dictating how much the Fulton Hogan crew can widen the road.
Mr. Tombs also highlighted that traffic control plays an important role during road rehabilitation.
“Road users don’t like to be held up by traffic and road work, but members of the public need to be tolerant temporarily because at the end of the day they get an improved road,” he said.
Fulton Hogan Hiways is working closely with the Fiji Road Authority and continues to provide road maintenance for the Central and Northern divisions.
