NZ organisation for migrants is condemning the election of ex-President Arroyo as House Speaker
After successfully evading accountability over plunder and electoral fraud, the election of ex-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as Speaker of the House of Representatives is the most sickening political circus in the Philippines this week.
Migrante Aotearoa New Zealand, an organisation of Filipinos working and living in NZ, shares the public outrage over the corrupt ex-president now being back in power. With Gloria Arroyo supporting President Duterte’s push for Charter Change, the future of Filipinos at home and abroad doesn’t look good at all. Surely, the Cha-Cha agenda means that political dynasties will continue to rule while the rich few get richer and the poor poorer.
On top of the infamous Hello Garci scandal that placed her in power, we remember the sins of Arroyo against Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) – her failure to save OFWs on death row and protect the victims of abusive employers. Under Arroyo’s watch, thousands of stranded OFWs in Saudi Arabia never received government assistance. Migrante International documented 1,400 claimant families of OFWs victimised abroad whose appeals for much needed burial and disability aid fell on Arroyo’s deaf ears.
Filipinos to work abroad and leave their families behind. Currently there are over 10 million Filipinos who continue to choose to work abroad because of rampant unemployment and underemployment under a government that continues to promote labour export. Daily, 6000 Filipinos leave the Philippines to due to lack or insufficient work at home due to the decade long failure of the Philippine government to create and provide decent jobs.
We must not forget the lies and sins of Arroyo, Duterte and all those who abused power. Duterte must be held accountable for the 12,000+ extra-judicial killings, and Arroyo for the 1,206 political killings plus 206 enforced disappearances.
Migrante Aotearoa will continue to stand with Filipinos around the world in demanding genuine change through socio-economic reforms that guarantee land for the poor, decent jobs and wages, adequate health care and other basic social services. Such reforms are necessary to end forced migration and bring about just and lasting peace in the Philippines.
