World Vision New Zealand will continue to advocate for the refugee children on Nauru

As the plight of the refugee children on Nauru remains unresolved after the Pacific Islands Forum, which finished yesterday, World Vision New Zealand will continue its call to get the kids off Nauru.

National Director Grant Bayldon says Pacific leaders have missed a major opportunity to help the children and their families detained on Nauru.

“As the Pacific Islands Forum is now over, the tragic story of the refugees held on Nauru risks being forgotten. We will not let that happen,” he says.

In August, World Vision put a call out to the New Zealand Government to see the refugee children and their families resettled here before International Children’s Day on 20 November 2018.

Bayldon says there’s no reason this shouldn’t happen.

“With Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern reiterating the offer to take 150 refugees off Nauru, as well as the pressure from the public and media, we believe Australia must allow the kids and their families to leave Nauru and get to safety,” he says.

“Whatever the outcome, until the children are resettled in safety, we will continue to advocate on their behalf,” says Bayldon.

World Vision believes children have a right to a safe and secure future where they can be cared for, protected, and are free to live life in all its fullness.
