Papua New Guinea - attacks
Papua New Guinea soldiers have destroyed property in a series of attacks on 5 and 6 January.
Lae Metropolitan Police Commander chief superintendent James Luan said the incident happened after a soldier allegedly got his vehicle stoned by some youths.
Luan said the victim should have reported the matter to the nearest police station for the police to deal with the matter.
The Post Courier newspaper received information that about four houses were burned down, with others destroyed, and a pig was killed and taken.
A meeting was held between the victims, landowners, the PNG Defence Force and police on Wednesday.
Police are investigating.
Pacific - carbon levy on shipping industry
There's a growing list of countries now supporting a carbon levy on the shipping industry.
Pacific island nations are continuing to call for the most ambitious levy of US$150 a tonne on greenhouse gas emissions, while other nations in Europe, Asia and Africa are calling for smaller levies.
The International Maritime Organisation has agreed to reach net zero emissions by 2050 with interim checkpoints in 2030 and 2040.
The organisation is expected to agree on a form of greenhouse gas pricing in April this year.
Fiji - return to office
Fiji's chief prosecutor will resume duties next week after an investigation cleared him of alleged "misbehaviour".
New Zealander Christopher Pryde has been reinstated after a tribunal unanimously found that the two allegations made against him had not been made out.
The tribunal's findings, handed down to Fiji's president three weeks ago, recommended that Pryde not be removed from his position.
President Naiqama Lalabalavu wrote to Pryde last Tuesday, advising him that his suspension had been lifted.
Solomon Islands - visitor arrivals
Visitor arrivals to Solomon Islands increased by 7.1% to 6,903 visitors for the third quarter of 2024, compared to the previous three months.
SIBC reports the Solomon Islands National Statistics Office released the latest report on Christmas Eve.
Total international arrivals for the period reached 13,966, although half of these were returning residents.
Comparing the third quarter of 2023 to the third quarter of 2024, visitor arrivals increased by 22.7%.
Niue - bowls
A former Niue Commonwealth Games representative, Olivia Bloomfield, has claimed the 2025 New Zealand Bowls Nationals Championships women's pairs title.
Bloomfield, who represented Niue at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, partnered Lisa Prideaux to win the title in Auckland last week
Niue Island Commonwealth Games Association's Sidney Lui said Bloomfield became the first female bowler from the island nation to claim the New Zealand title.
