Weather Workshop: Five Day Forecast

Issued by Weather Workshop on Tuesday, 15 June 1999 at noon.

The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Saturday.

Situation: A large complex trough of low pressure is crossing the country today and tomorrow and by later Wednesday lowest pressures are expected to be southeast of Otago. A colder southwest airflow follows. On Thursday a ridge of high pressure is likely to spread onto central and southern areas as remains of the trough moves off the upper North Island. A cold front should affect New Zealand from the west Friday and Saturday.

NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE,TAUPO, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Showery conditions continuing but during tomorrow showers becoming less frequent from the south as westerlies give way to colder southwest winds. A few showers north of Hamilton Thursday otherwise mainly fine. Cloud increasing Friday, rain developing in the west from Taranaki south later in the day. Rain or showers in most places Saturday.

GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Showers about the western ranges spreading elsewhere at times today. Strong northwesterlies in exposed areas south of Napier. Tomorrow showers becoming confined to the ranges with long fine periods further east then showers widespread from the south later. During Thursday becoming fine in most places and remaining showers clearing from Gisborne. Dry with increasing high cloud Friday then colder southerlies spreading north Saturday with showers.

WELLINGTON: Showery today and tomorrow but by the end of Wednesday showers few and far between and colder with southerlies. Mainly fine Thursday. Cloud increasing Friday with late rain then cold Saturday with showers and fine periods.

NELSON and MARLBOROUGH: Showers spreading from the west today then tomorrow showers gradually clearing. Mainly fine on Thursday. Cloud increasing Friday then late rain spreading from the west. Rain clearing from Nelson and inland Marlborough early Saturday but showers persisting about coastal Marlborough for a time.

BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Showery conditions today with a few thunderstorms. After dark turning much colder south of the glaciers with snow possible about the ranges. Tomorrow showers gradually clearing from the south. Thursday sees long fine periods in most places but about Fiordland cloudy with drizzly rain. Rain spreading further north Friday then late in the day skies clearing about the fiords. Becoming fine Saturday with remaining rain in the north clearing.

CANTERBURY: Showers spreading from the main divide for much of today. Tomorrow showers clearing from the south and colder. Mainly fine and frosty Thursday. On Friday cloud increasing then late in the day southwesterlies and showers working north. Becoming mostly fine Saturday but coastal showers may persist.

OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Showery weather continuing until early tomorrow then fine periods increasing. Snow likely to low levels about the hills for a time. Later Wednesday clearing inland and becoming very frosty. Thursday sees cloud increasing with a few showers about the south coast and Stewart Island, elsewhere dry. Rain becoming widespread Friday then easing to coastal showers early Saturday with skies clearing inland.

CHATHAM ISLANDS: Rain easing to showers tonight then showery and turning much colder tomorrow. Northwesterlies should give way to southwesterlies Wednesday afternoon. Showers becoming few and far between Thursday then dry and cloudy on Friday. Showery southerlies Saturday.
