Short Forecast from Weather Workshop valid to midnight tonight.
For Northland, Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula: Mainly cloudy with rain developing in Northland this morning. From evening, widespread showers and cool southwesterlies developing with isolated thunderstorms possible.
In the west from Waikato to Wellington, also for Bay of Plenty and the central plateau: Mainly fine at first but cloudy from Taranaki south with a few brief showers possible. From late morning, showers becoming widespread for a time as a cool southwest change works northward. Some snow is possible to 800 metres in the high country.
In the east from Gisborne to Wairarapa: Mainly fine at first then showers and cool southerlies spread northward, reaching Gisborne late in the day.
Nelson: Fine at first. Brief showers developing Late morning then becoming fine again towards evening.
For Marlborough and Canterbury: Fine at first. Cold southerlies spread north later this morning with a period of rain then easing to showers. Snow to the ranges later to 700 metres.
Along the west coast of the South Island: Showers spreading north this morning. Snow about Fiordland to 500 metres. From afternoon, showers gradually clearing from the south.
In Otago and Southland: Showers and cold southerlies this morning. Snow lowering to 500 metres for a time. From afternoon, clearing inland with showers retreating to coastal places. Becoming very frosty inland after dark.
Chatham Islands: Showers at times. Turning colder from afternoon.
