The Situation: A cold front is crossing the country today and is followed by a cool southwesterly airstream. A high in the Tasman Sea is intensifying and should start to push a ridge onto the lower South Island by evening.
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI and TARANAKI: A mix of cloud and fine breaks with a few showers becoming more widespread from afternoon and evening. Southwest winds.
COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA and TAUPO: Mainly fine But cloud increasing towards evening and a few showers likely after dark. Southwest winds.
TAIHAPE, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Cloud increasing with showers becoming widespread this afternoon. Northwest winds turning southwest later.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Mainly fine at first. Showers and southerlies spread north from afternoon, reaching Gisborne by evening.
WELLINGTON: Cloudy with northerlies at first. Showers and cool southerlies developing by afternoon.
NELSON: Showers and southerlies developing this morning then clearing by evening.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Rain easing to showers then clearing from the south this afternoon. Southwest winds.
MARLBOROUGH and CANTERBURY: Showers and southwesterlies with snow lowering to 700 metres about the alps for a time. Slowly becoming fine inland towards evening.
OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Showery with snow to low levels about the ranges for a time and Southwest winds. Becoming fine and frosty inland tonight but showers remaining about the coast.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: Showers and cool southwesterlies developing.
THE OUTLOOK FOR TOMORROW: Showers retreat to the far north of the country with mostly fine and frosty weather elsewhere. A few clouds and the odd light shower remain about coastal Otago and Southland however. At the Chathams, showers with cold southwesterlies.
