Weather Workshop: 5 day forecast for NZ

Issued by Weather Workshop on Thursday, July 08, 1999 at 11.00am

The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Monday.

Situation: A cold front is crossing the North Island from the southwest today and a ridge of high pressure is spreading onto the South Island. Tomorrow the ridge should work further north as a high approaches from the west. Saturday sees the anticyclone covering much of the country before gradually drifting northeast during Sunday and Monday. This will allow a trough of low pressure to advance slowly onto the South Island from the south Tasman Sea.

NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY, ROTORUA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TAUPO, TARANAKI and TAIHAPE: Rain or showers affecting most places today as a cold front moves northward. Tomorrow becoming fine south of Auckland but further north showers persisting for a time. Cloudy periods Saturday from eastern Northland to Coromandel Peninsula with a few light showers, elsewhere fine. Mainly fine after that but cloudy areas likely in western areas on Monday.

WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Showers becoming confined to the eastern ranges overnight with fine periods increasing further west. Skies clearing altogether tomorrow. Mostly fine and frosty over the weekend. Cloudy westerlies with light showers Monday.

GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Showery today with cold southwesterlies. Tomorrow a mix of cloud and fine periods with remaining showers clearing from Gisborne. Mostly fine and frosty Saturday and Sunday. Fine again Monday with westerlies.

NELSON: Becoming fine later today. Fine again tomorrow and thru the weekend with overnight frosts. Cloudy with showers Monday.

MARLBOROUGH and CANTERBURY: Rain or showers slowly becoming confined to coastal places north of Banks Peninsula later today with fine frosty weather inland overnight. Tomorrow and Saturday fine then high cloud increasing Sunday. A southwest change working north during Monday with a period of rain.

BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Remaining showers clearing from Buller and northern Westland this afternoon, elsewhere fine. Fine and frosty tomorrow and Saturday apart from cloudy periods with light showers to southern Fiordland. Sunday sees persistent rain spreading north as far as the glaciers, elsewhere cloudy with a few drizzle areas. Rain slowly easing to showers from the south Monday.

OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Clearing weather inland today with showers retreating to the south coast. Tomorrow showers persisting along the south coast again otherwise fine and frosty. Mostly fine and frosty again Saturday but some cloud about Foveaux Strait. During Sunday rain working slowly north with a late southwest change then on Monday showers becoming confined to coastal places and conditions inland clearing.

CHATHAM ISLANDS: Rain easing to showers today with wintry southwesterlies. Further showers tomorrow. Over the weekend westerlies expected with rather cloudy skies and the odd light shower. Rain setting in Monday, colder southerlies likely later.
