Weather Workshop: 5 day forecast for NZ

The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Friday.

Situation: A high lies over the North Island today. A trough of low pressure covers the lower South Island. A front crosses the South Island tonight and should lie over the upper North Island by late tomorrow leaving a southwesterly airstream over the country. A ridge of high pressure covers the country on Wednesday then weakens on Thursday as a depression intensifies in the North Tasman Sea. On Friday the low moves into the central Tasman and pulls a moist northeasterly airstream over the country

NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY, ROTORUA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TAUPO, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: A mix of cloud and fine breaks today with a few showers developing from Wanganui to Manawatu. Tomorrow, showers spread north, reaching Auckland after dark. Becoming fine in most places on Wednesday. On Thursday, rain developing in Northland and spreading as far south as the central plateau with extensive high cloud elsewhere. Rain to most places on Friday.

GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Fine today. Showers and southwesterlies spread north tomorrow, reaching Gisborne late afternoon. Mainly fine on Wednesday but some coastal cloud on Thursday. Rain spreading from the north on Friday.

WELLINGTON: Mainly fine today. Showers and southerlies developing tomorrow then becoming fine on Wednesday. Mainly fine on Thursday. Patchy rain developing on Friday.

NELSON: Mainly fine today. Cloud increasing about western areas however. Showers and southwesterlies at first tomorrow then clearing from afternoon. Fine on Wednesday but cloud increasing on Thursday and patchy rain developing on Friday.

MARLBOROUGH and CANTERBURY: Mostly cloudy with some drizzly rain developing today in Canterbury and along the Kaikoura Coast but mainly dry in inland Marlborough. A southwest change spreads north early tomorrow with skies clearing inland but a few showers remain about the coast for a time. Fine inland Wednesday and Thursday but cloudy at times about the coast. On Friday, mostly cloudy with extensive drizzle about the coast.

BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Drizzly rain becoming widespread today. A few showers tomorrow morning then becoming fine from the south. Fine to most places on Wednesday and Thursday. Cloudy on Friday with patchy rain about Buller spreading further south.

OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Outbreaks of rain easing to showers later with a cool southwest change. Expect snow to the ranges then clearing inland overnight. A few coastal showers tomorrow but mainly fine inland. Mostly fine on Wednesday and Thursday but cloud increasing on Friday with drizzle developing about the Otago coast.

CHATHAM ISLANDS: Rain developing later today then showery tomorrow with cool southwesterlies. Showers remain on Wednesday and Thursday. Cloudy at times on Friday but dry.
