The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Saturday.
Situation: A weak frontal zone about central areas is moving northeast and is expected clear the upper North Island overnight. The front is followed by a ridge which should dominate the country during tomorrow and early Thursday. Pressures are currently low off the coast of northern New South Wales and from later this week a deepening depression is likely to move from there into the central Tasman spreading an extensive cloud sheet towards the country. Friday sees frontal activity working onto northern New Zealand as a ridge drifts east. During Saturday frontal cloud spreads onto South Island areas.
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TAUPO, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Cloudy periods today with a few showers about western areas, showers spreading further north early tomorrow then clearing in most places from the south. High cloud increasing about Northland early Thursday with patchy rain developing there. Elsewhere a mix of fine and cloudy weather. During Friday rain spreading further south with increasing northeasterly winds from Taranaki to Northland. Widespread falls likely Saturday with a few heavy falls possible.
BAY of PLENTY, ROTORUA: Mostly fine today and tomorrow. High cloud thickening Thursday but remaining dry. Scattered rain expected Friday with freshening northeast winds. Saturday sees widespread rain with heavy falls possible.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Cloudy periods today with brief showers spreading north later this afternoon and evening then becoming fine tomorrow from the south. Mainly fine Thursday. Dry on Friday with thickening high cloud. Brief rain expected Saturday.
WELLINGTON: Brief showers clearing later today and mostly fine tomorrow and Thursday. Cloud increasing Friday then patchy rain on Saturday.
NELSON: Mostly fine today and thru' until Thursday but by then high cloud increasing. Patchy rain later Friday then further more extensive falls on Saturday.
MARLBOROUGH and CANTERBURY: Fine inland. Coastal cloudiness with brief showers south of Banks Peninsula tomorrow. Cloudy periods Thursday, especially about the coast, but remaining dry. High cloud increasing Friday and drizzle patches about coastal Canterbury. Scattered rain spreading from the north during Saturday.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Mainly fine today and tomorrow but rather cloudy skies expected about Fiordland. Cloudy conditions more widespread Thursday with a few drizzle patches at night. Patchy rain spreading to most places from the north Friday with freshening northeasterlies. Saturday sees widespread falls.
OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Cloudy periods about the south coast today and tomorrow with a few light showers, elsewhere mainly fine conditions. Cloudy Thursday and Friday but dry. A few falls of rain Saturday, chiefly about the south coast and Stewart Island.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: A few showers today and up until Thursday with winds mainly from the southwest. Cloudy and dry Friday onwards, northerlies likely Saturday.
