The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Sunday.
Situation: A trough of low pressure should lie east of New Zealand tomorrow then move further away during Friday allowing a ridge to slowly spread onto the far south of the country. The weekend sees an anticyclone moving onto most areas from the Tasman Sea.
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE, TAUPO, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: A mix of fine and cloudy periods today and tomorrow with showers at times. Also thunderstorms today in western areas. Showers clearing from most places Friday but persisting from Auckland northwards. Over the weekend cloudy periods with further showers from Coromandel Peninsula to Northland, elsewhere mainly fine conditions.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and
WAIRARAPA: Showers developing about the main ranges today
and persisting there tomorrow otherwise fine. Showers may
become widespread after dark Thursday about Wairarapa.
Showers in most places Friday with southwesterlies. During
Saturday showers becoming confined to coastal areas with
fine spells increasing inland. Sunday sees a mix of fine and
cloudy
weather with brief light showers about
Gisborne.
WELLINGTON: Showers and fine periods today and thru to Friday. Northerlies turning to colder southerlies about the middle of tomorrow. Showers gradually clearing Saturday then mainly fine Sunday.
NELSON: Showery today and at first tomorrow then becoming fine. Fine and frosty after that.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Showery for much of today and tomorrow but skies clearing later Thursday from Hokitika south. Mainly fine Friday and Saturday. Cloudy periods Sunday south of the glaciers, elsewhere continuing mostly fine.
MARLBOROUGH: Showers about northern Marlborough today elsewhere generally fine. Tomorrow showers and colder southerlies expected. Friday sees showers persisting along the Kaikoura coast and about the sounds, inland slowly clearing. Mainly fine at the weekend.
CANTERBURY and OTAGO: Fine today apart from cloudy periods. Tomorrow showers widespread for a time with cold southerlies working north. Snow lowering on the ranges. Later Thursday fine periods developing about inland Otago with showers there retreating to the coast. A mix of cloudy and fine weather Friday. Mainly fine and frosty over the weekend.
SOUTHLAND: Mostly fine today. Early tomorrow cold southerlies and showers becoming general then snow to low levels about the ranges at night. Showers becoming confined to the coast Friday with fine periods increasing inland. Saturday and Sunday sees fine conditions inland but skies cloudy for much of the time about the coast and Stewart Island with westerlies.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: Rain breaking to showers tomorrow with northeasterlies easing. Cold and showery Friday with southerly winds. Further showery weather over the weekend with cold winds from the south or southwest.
